About This Activity
Step onto the legendary Kotli Bhel Trek — an ancient Char Dham pilgrimage path transformed into one of Rishikesh's most spectacular off-beat adventures. This 16 km trail, recently developed by the Pauri Garhwal administration in the style of the famous Gartang Gali wooden walkways, takes you through a dramatic landscape where the Himalayas meet the sacred Ganga.
Your journey begins at Mahadevchatti on the Badrinath Highway, just 20 km from Rishikesh. Descend through pine-scented forests towards the roaring Ganga, cross an exhilarating suspension bridge (jhula pul), and enter the timeless village of Rampati. The trail — hand-carved into sheer rock faces during the British era using nothing but pickaxes (kutli in Garhwali) — hugs the mountainside with the Ganga's turquoise waters thundering 100+ meters below.
The highlight awaits at the trek's midpoint: a pristine hidden waterfall cascading through moss-covered rocks into a crystal-clear pool. This secluded spot, known only to locals and seasoned trekkers, offers the perfect reward — a refreshing dip surrounded by untouched Himalayan wilderness.
Along the way, experience authentic Garhwali village life. Pass through terraced farmlands where locals cultivate mandua (finger millet) and jhangora (barnyard millet). Chat with villagers in their traditional stone houses. Witness a way of life unchanged for centuries.
Unlike the crowded trails to Neer Garh or Patna Waterfall, Kotli Bhel remains Rishikesh's best-kept secret — a trail where you'll likely have the mountains to yourself. The newly installed wooden railings and restored stone pathways make this historic route safer than ever while preserving its raw, adventurous spirit.
